Gempler's Rust Converter (1 Quart) is a ready-to-use liquid that chemically stabilizes rusted steel, turning active corrosion into a paintable, protective surface.
If you need a practical way to stop rust progression and prepare metal for finishing, this one-quart rust converter offers a straightforward, economical solution. It reacts with iron oxides to create a more stable substrate, reducing flaking and providing a base for topcoats or leaving protected bare metal in sheltered locations. The formula is designed for use on ferrous surfaces such as farm equipment, fences, automotive parts, structural steel and workshop projects.
The rust converter chemically bonds with iron oxide and transforms it into a more stable compound, which reduces loose scale and slows further oxidation. After application the treated area becomes less likely to continue flaking, making it easier to maintain or finish with paint. It does not remove heavy deposits—surface prep is still important.
Yes—under certain conditions the treated surface can remain unpainted. The product documentation notes that surfaces may be left unpainted if they won’t be exposed to direct weather elements such as driving rain or continual outdoor moisture. For exterior or high-exposure applications, a protective topcoat is recommended to extend longevity.
Good prep improves effectiveness: remove loose rust, dirt, oil and flaky scale before applying. Apply with a brush, roller or sprayer according to directions, cover adjacent areas, and let the converter cure fully before painting or exposing to heavy moisture. Multiple light coats may be better than one thick coat for uniform conversion.
Curing time depends on temperature and humidity but typically requires several hours to a day to set adequately for light handling. Wait until the converted layer is dry-to-touch and not tacky before applying primer or paint. For best adhesion, follow recommended manufacturer intervals and ensure the surface is clean and dry before coating.
Who is this for? Gempler's Rust Converter (1 Quart) is intended for farmers, mechanics, contractors, and hobbyists who repair, restore or maintain metal equipment and structures. It fits projects that need a fast, economical method to stabilize rusted iron and steel before painting or for sheltered items that can remain uncoated. Choose this size when you want a manageable container for multiple small-to-medium repairs around the shop, farm or property.
Q: Is this ready to use or do I need to mix it?
A: Ready-to-use from the quart container—no mixing required; apply to cleaned, dry metal.
Q: Can I use it on non-ferrous metals like aluminum?
A: No—it's formulated for ferrous metals (iron and steel). Do not use on aluminum or zinc.
