The Lisle 20700 is a coil-on-plug spark tester built to quickly verify ignition activity on engines that use individual coil boots instead of traditional plug wires.
If your vehicle uses coil-on-plug (COP) ignition—common on many Ford, Chrysler, Mitsubishi, Nissan and other late-model engines—traditional inductive testers that clamp on a wire won’t work. The Lisle 20700 gives you a direct, simple way to confirm whether each coil is producing a spark by creating a visible, adjustable test gap and grounding lead, so you can isolate misfires and focus diagnostics faster.
The tester slips over the coil boot or contacts the lower portion of the coil assembly to create a safe gap where a spark can be observed. It does not rely on a secondary wire, so it’s suitable for modern COP designs. The visible spark indicates coil output, while absence of a spark narrows the fault to the coil, connector, or control circuit.
This tester was made for vehicles that use coil-on-plug or coil-near-plug architectures. It works across a wide range of makes that have individual coils mounted directly on or near the spark plugs. Always verify physical fit before use, as coil shapes and access vary by engine model.
Start with the engine cranking or idling as required by your diagnostic procedure, attach the ground clip to a good chassis or engine ground, then position the tester over the coil boot or terminal. Turn the round knob to set a gap where a spark will be visible; inspect in a well-lit area and keep hands and tools clear of moving parts and high-voltage components.
The tool is compact and packaged as a single unit ready for shop use. It was produced with manufacturing origins in Taiwan and ships in a small sealed package suitable for parts bins or tool chests. The lightweight footprint makes it easy to carry for mobile technicians or DIYers.
Who this tool is for: The Lisle 20700 is aimed at professional mechanics, independent technicians and informed DIY enthusiasts who work on vehicles with coil-on-plug ignition systems. If you regularly troubleshoot modern engines and need a straightforward, portable method to confirm coil output without dismantling the ignition system, this tester speeds up diagnosis and helps pinpoint faulty coils or wiring problems before moving on to more invasive tests.
Q: Can this tester perform inductive tests on coil-on-plug systems?
A: No. Inductive clamping isn’t possible on COP systems; this Lisle tester uses a visible gap method instead.
Q: Is the Lisle 20700 safe to use on running engines?
A: Yes when used properly: attach the ground clip securely, avoid moving parts, and wear eye protection.
