The Mighty Mule FM140 100 ft Driveway Vehicle Sensor is a direct-burial magnetic probe that detects metal vehicles up to a 12-foot field and triggers your automatic gate to open for exit without using a remote.
This hardwired driveway sensor is designed to give vehicles a hands-free exit by sensing mass metal in motion as it passes through its detection zone. Tough enough to be trenched beside a driveway, the FM140 connects directly to your Mighty Mule control box and works with single or dual gate systems. It’s available with 100 feet of cable so you can position the probe where it best detects outbound traffic while staying safely inside your property line.
The FM140 uses a magnetic field created around the buried probe to sense moving metal. When a vehicle passes through the roughly 12-foot detection zone, the sensor signals the gate opener control box to initiate an open cycle for exit without a remote. Sensitivity is tuned for common vehicles including cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs.
Install the probe beside your driveway within the property, trenching the 100 ft. cable and burying the wand no deeper than 12 inches for optimal field reach. Position the wand so vehicles pass through the detection field as they exit; typical placement is a few feet off the driving surface toward the property side. Wiring runs back to the control box can be between 3 and 100 feet per the product specifications.
The FM140 is compatible with Mighty Mule control boxes designed to accept a wired driveway sensor input and supports both single and dual gate configurations. It integrates with the gate opener just like the factory wired exit sensor, providing a simple and reliable free-exit solution for vehicles. For wireless needs or different cable lengths, Mighty Mule offers alternative models.
Once properly installed and sealed in place, the FM140 requires minimal upkeep beyond occasional visual checks of the cable pathway and control-box connections. The buried probe design protects the sensor from weather and debris, while the hardwired connection reduces interference issues common with wireless alternatives. Periodic testing after storms or heavy ground work is a good practice to confirm continued detection performance.
Who is this for: The FM140 is aimed at homeowners, property managers, and small facilities using Mighty Mule automatic gate openers who want a dependable, hands-free exit solution for vehicles. If you prefer a wired, low-interference sensor that can be positioned up to 100 feet from the gate and buried beside a driveway, the FM140 offers a practical, DIY-friendly option that works with both single and dual gate setups.
Q: How deep should I bury the FM140 probe?
A: Bury the probe no deeper than 12 inches beside the driveway for optimal detection performance.
Q: Can the FM140 be placed far from the gate opener?
A: Yes — the FM140 includes 100 ft. of cable and can be installed between 3 and 100 feet from the control box.
