RECCO Backpack Rescue Reflector - Black lightweight, battery-free reflector for backpacks, easy mount

The RECCO Backpack Rescue Reflector (Black) is a lightweight, battery-free reflector that makes you searchable to professional rescue teams using RECCO detectors.

Designed to attach to a backpack carry strap, the RECCO Backpack Rescue Reflector provides an extra layer of visibility for outdoor adventurers. It doesn't replace essential safety equipment like avalanche transceivers, but it gives search-and-rescue teams an additional tool to locate you quickly via harmonic radar used in handheld and helicopter-mounted RECCO detectors.

How does the RECCO system find someone wearing this reflector?

Professional rescuers use RECCO detectors that transmit a radar signal; the reflector’s diode mixer returns harmonic frequencies the detector recognizes. The detector translates the returned signal into an audio tone whose volume helps operators pinpoint the reflector’s exact location.

• Two-part system: RECCO detector plus passive reflector.
• Detectors include handheld units and helicopter-mounted systems with ranges over 200 meters.
• The reflector requires no batteries or activation — it works continuously when intact.

Where and how should I attach the backpack reflector?

This reflector is made to fasten to a backpack carry loop or strap so it remains visible to search teams from the air and on the ground. It uses a pull-through elastic design for simple mounting and stays out of the way while you move.

• Attach to the top carry loop or a shoulder strap for best exposure.
• Compact and lightweight at about 4 grams — won’t affect pack comfort.
• Durable, maintenance-free construction with effectively unlimited lifespan if undamaged.

Will the reflector work in different outdoor activities and seasons?

The RECCO Backpack Rescue Reflector is suitable for both winter and summer use, helping search teams during skiing, snowboarding, hiking, mountain biking, and other pursuits. Its passive design means it functions regardless of weather or battery availability.

• Useful in avalanche scenarios and broader missing-person searches.
• Commonly used by skiers, snowboarders, hikers, and cyclists worldwide.
• Not a substitute for personal avalanche transceivers or other primary safety gear.

How widely supported is RECCO technology among rescue organizations?

RECCO has been developed since 1983 and is now used by hundreds of rescue teams and ski resorts globally. Since 2015, helicopter-mounted detectors expanded search capability, allowing rapid coverage of large areas.

• Over 900 search-and-rescue organisations and ski resorts use RECCO detectors.
• Both handheld and helicopter detectors increase chances of rapid location.
• Continual evolution of RECCO expands applications beyond avalanche-only scenarios.

Who is this for? The RECCO Backpack Rescue Reflector (Black) is aimed at outdoor enthusiasts who want a low-effort, low-weight safety enhancement for their pack. It’s ideal for backcountry skiers, snowboarders, hikers, mountain bikers, and travellers who appreciate that rescue teams may be able to detect them more easily. Use it together with primary safety tools — helmets, transceivers, proper route planning, and emergency kits — for a more comprehensive approach to outdoor safety.
