RECCO Backpack Rescue Reflector — Red slip-on reflector, battery-free locator for backpacks

The RECCO Backpack Rescue Reflector is a passive, battery-free locator designed to attach to backpack straps so trained rescuers can detect you with a RECCO detector.

Lightweight and maintenance-free, this compact red reflector is made to be slipped onto the carrying loop or shoulder strap of outdoor packs. It does not emit any signal by itself; instead it reflects harmonic radar pulses sent by professional RECCO detectors, helping search teams pinpoint a person’s location during outdoor emergencies.

How does the RECCO reflector help rescuers locate someone?

When a RECCO detector is operated by trained search personnel, the reflector returns a harmonic signal that the detector translates into an audible tone. The tone’s strength increases as the rescuer gets closer, allowing precise direction-finding even from aircraft or on the ground.

• Works with RECCO detectors used by professional search teams worldwide.
• Reflects harmonic radar pulses—no batteries or power source needed.
• Signal is translated into volume-based feedback for accurate pinpointing.

Is installation and upkeep difficult for everyday use?

The reflector is designed for simple, tool-free attachment to backpack carrying straps or loops, using a flexible slip-on mount. There’s no periodic charging, programming, or servicing required, and it keeps functioning as long as the reflector remains intact.

• Slip-on elastic mount fits most backpack loops and straps.
• No batteries, switches, or scheduled maintenance needed.
• Durable construction offers a long service life if not physically damaged.

What environments and activities are RECCO reflectors intended for?

Designed for mountain and wilderness settings, the reflector is commonly used for hiking, skiing, mountaineering, and other outdoor pursuits where helicopter or ground searches may occur. It’s intended to improve the chances of detection by organized search teams equipped with RECCO detectors.

• Useful in both winter avalanche and summer backcountry search scenarios.
• Suited for backpacks, helmets, boots, and outerwear attachments.
• Recognized by more than 950 search and rescue organizations globally.

Will the RECCO reflector replace personal emergency devices?

RECCO reflectors complement, but do not replace, personal emergency beacons, cell phones, or satellite communicators. They provide an additional passive detection option that can be particularly effective when professional rescuers are using RECCO equipment during search operations.

• Acts as a no-maintenance backup to active emergency transmitters.
• Best used together with PLBs, satellite messengers, and proper trip planning.
• Enhances visibility to trained search teams equipped with detectors.

Who is this for? The RECCO Backpack Rescue Reflector is aimed at outdoor enthusiasts who want an always-on, maintenance-free way to improve detectability by professional search teams. Hikers, backcountry skiers, climbers, and frequent travelers in remote terrain will find it a lightweight addition to their safety kit. It’s particularly valuable for anyone who carries a pack in areas where organized rescue services use RECCO detectors.
