The Sporthfish 77750 oil filter cutter is a compact, aluminum-alloy tool that cleanly slices open automotive and small-engine oil filters sized 2-3/8" to 5" so you can inspect media, recycle canisters, and reduce waste.
If you service vehicles, lawn equipment, motorcycles or small aircraft, knowing what’s inside an oil filter helps you assess engine wear, contamination and maintenance needs. The Sporthfish 77750 combines a billet anodized-aluminum body, stainless-steel lead screw, positioning rollers and a spare cutting wheel to deliver a reliable, tube-cutter-style cut on thin-walled filter cans. It’s designed for repetitive workshop use while remaining lightweight and easy to carry.
The cutter operates like a rotary tube cutter: a circular cutting wheel is brought into light contact with the filter housing and the filter is rotated until the blade scores and then slices through. The lead screw lets you micro-adjust blade pressure to avoid crushing the can and to produce a clean opening for inspection.
This cutter is sized for thin-walled metal oil filters and similar cans with diameters from 2-3/8" (about 60 mm) up to 5" (about 127 mm). It is not suitable for very small cartridge filters or for very large containers outside that range.
The main body is CNC billet aluminum with an anodized red finish for corrosion resistance and workshop durability. The blade assembly uses a replaceable cutting wheel and simple hardware, so keeping the tool sharp and functional requires only occasional blade changes and basic cleaning.
With containment for any residual oil, score the filter lightly while rotating; increase blade pressure gradually until the can opens. Empty the filter into an appropriate container, inspect the media and magnets (if present), then recycle the metal shell according to local regulations.
Who this is for: The Sporthfish 77750 is aimed at DIY mechanics, professional technicians, small aircraft maintainers, landscapers and anyone who inspects or recycles oil filters. It’s particularly useful when you need a compact, repeatable cutter that fits most common filter diameters, allows visual media checks, and helps reduce oil waste by enabling controlled draining and recycling of the filter canister.
