This cable provides a versatile, low-cost interface between a Windows PC and BMW vehicles that use K‑line and CAN bus protocols. It combines an FT232RL USB-to-serial chip with a manual switch to select K+D, D‑CAN or K‑CAN signaling, enabling communication with a wide range of models from older OBD BMWs to newer E‑chassis cars. The package includes the cable and a CD driver; confirm the store name is "Tao Tao" before purchase to ensure authenticity.
The Taotao K+CAN cable supports many BMW E‑series, selected MINI and newer X/Z models spanning mid‑1990s through 2019 depending on protocol. Older cars use the BMW OBD interface and some later models require the D‑CAN/PT‑CAN or K‑CAN modes selected via the switch.
The onboard slide switch toggles between K+D (K‑line plus D‑CAN) and all‑right (often for E46) positions so the cable can match a car's bus wiring. For many vehicles you’ll set the switch to one side for D‑CAN/PT‑CAN at 500 kbit/s or to the other for K‑CAN at 100 kbit/s; the manual setting avoids the need for extra adapters.
This cable reads and clears fault codes, performs certain adaptations and applies coding changes where supported by the vehicle’s protocol. It is built specifically for the driver (DME) module and related coding tasks but does not replace specialized programming tools for some control units.
The cable uses an FT232RL USB interface and requires matching drivers and diagnostic software, typically on Windows systems. Disable antivirus software during installation if it mistakenly flags the driver; the cable is optimized for Windows 7 32‑bit and may work on some Windows 8/10 setups but is not compatible with macOS.
Who is this for: Automotive technicians, independent BMW enthusiasts and DIY coders who need an affordable, switchable interface for diagnostic reading, basic coding and adaptation tasks on many E‑series and related BMW/MINI models. This cable is aimed at users who understand vehicle electronics and the limitations around module programming—if you require full control‑unit programming or dealer‑level flashing, choose a manufacturer‑level programmer instead.
Q: Will this cable program keys or CAS modules?
A: No. It cannot program CAS, key fob modules, light control modules, or SMG transmission ECUs.
Q: Which operating systems are supported?
A: Designed for Windows (best on Windows 7 32‑bit). May work on some Windows 8/10 systems; not compatible with macOS.
